KFI AM is Los Angeles's most well-known radio station. It broadcasts at 640 AM. It is heard across most of western North America, including Arizona as well as Nevada. It's a news and talk station during the day. It is a top-40 music station during the evening. KFI provides shows for national syndication, aside from local programming.

KFI was Los Angeles Dodgers’ flagship station during the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s, it aired the entire Dodgers game. KFI was the main source of war information in Los Angeles during World War II. It also carried NBC's weekend broadcast service.

For 25 years, "The Swingin’ Years" was nationally syndicated. It was hosted by Chuck Cecil from 1956 to the 1970s. Before it moved to KKJZ in Long Beach, it aired on KFI.

KFI was a talk and news station that shifted from a top-40 format in the late 1970s. Scott Ellsworth's program "Scott's Place", featured jazz music. Ted Rall as well Charlie Fox were the other hosts.

Lohman & Barkley formed a morning duo. They also did live-call-in shows. Casey Bartholomew was a board operator and wrote many popular "updates." Tim Kelly served as a contributor to the Bill Handel Program.


KFI is also a pioneer in the Emergency Alert System Western U.S., providing play-byplay broadcasts and support to other stations across the Southwest. Its transmitter is located in La Mirada, California. It turned off HD signals on August 12, 2015.

KFI owns an iHeartRadio online streaming platform. There are two local shows, one of which is a national syndicated talk show. All of the hosts hail from Southern California. Some of radio's most prominent personalities have been featured on the station.

KFI's lineup has changed a lot in the past decade. Many of the former hosts have left KFI. Some have returned. Neil Saavedra is now the marketing director. Mike Nolan, ground-based traffic reporter is back on the air.

KFI also added new programs. Mike Nolan, who was absent for a while, returned to KFI's 103.5 airwaves as a subject-matter expert for aviation topics. He is also the host of the Jesus Christ Show on Sundays.

KFI held its 50th Anniversary celebration at Burbank, CA's Radio Station. Cox Broadcasting acquired KFI for $15million. This was one of the largest sums ever paid for a station on radio.
